A few words about Anchorage.
We are Alaska’s largest city, with a population of 280,000.
Anchorage sits on the shores of Cook Inlet, at the foot of the
snow-covered Chugach Mountains. On clear days, one can see the
Alaska, Talkeetna and Denali ranges, as well as Mt. McKinley itself,
the continent’s highest peak at 20,320 feet, several hours
drive away.
The Portage Glacier is less than an hour’s drive from downtown,
and the Kenai Peninsula, Prince William Sound and Resurrection
Bay are all within easy driving distance. Aside from the spectacular
scenery, there are lots of hiking trails, great salmon fishing
and opportunities to see whales, sea otters, puffins, moose (Anchorage
backyard fixtures), and other wildlife. Long summer daylight hours
will allow you to get into the nearby Chugach mountains after
work or on weekends. (No classes are scheduled on weekends, but
performances do take place on the final two weekends of Conservatory.)
