Alaska Theatre of Youth, established in 1983, holds an annual summer conservatory for children age 5 - 18. The ATY Summer Conservatory is held at Alaska’s premiere theater complex: the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts (PAC) in downtown Anchorage.

The PAC, with its four theaters, set and costume shops and classrooms, provides a fantastic opportunity for kids to learn theater arts in thoroughly professional surroundings.

ATY’s 2009 Conservatory, for 125 - 200 children, will be divided into seven sections: Fairy Tale Theater (ages 5-8), Regular Conservatory (ages 8-18), Advanced Conservatory (ages 8-18), Broadway Musical Conservatory (8-18) Shakespeare Conservatory (ages 12-18), Performance Art Conservatory (14-18) and Technical Conservatory (ages 13-18). The program culminates with 9 productions, three performances

Anchorage, set on Cook Inlet at the foot of the Chugach Mountains, is within easy driving distance of some of the USA’s most spectacular scenery and wildlife. There are excellent day-hike destinations only ten miles from downtown, and with summer daylight lasting until midnight, after-work hikes are no problem.

A few words about Anchorage. We are Alaska’s largest city, with a population of 280,000. Anchorage sits on the shores of Cook Inlet, at the foot of the snow-covered Chugach Mountains. On clear days, one can see the Alaska, Talkeetna and Denali ranges, as well as Mt. McKinley itself, the continent’s highest peak at 20,320 feet, several hours drive away.

The Portage Glacier is less than an hour’s drive from downtown, and the Kenai Peninsula, Prince William Sound and Resurrection Bay are all within easy driving distance. Aside from the spectacular scenery, there are lots of hiking trails, great salmon fishing and opportunities to see whales, sea otters, puffins, moose (Anchorage backyard fixtures), and other wildlife. Long summer daylight hours will allow you to get into the nearby Chugach mountains after work or on weekends. (No classes are scheduled on weekends, but performances do take place on the final two weekends of Conservatory.)
